.Kurt Campbell wears two hats — on# as a Rappahannock weekend farmer, the other as assistant secretary of defense for Asian affairs.
It was in both capacities he hosted a visit here recently for top level Chinese and U.S. officials and shared with them all the beauty and bounty of Rappahannock County.
Jt was a historically significant day, Mr. Campbell said, as seriior U.S. defense officials and top Chinese military attaches gathered here on the last Saturday of October for a planning session that would kick off a series of "very high level meetings at the highest level of both governments" in the next few weeks.
"This was an important day as we tried to build relations with our Chinese friends and the Middleton Inn provided us with fantastic hospitality. It was the right kind of atmosphere," he said.
The Middleton Inn was the site of an afternoon tea Mr. Campbell hosted with other senior defense officials for the visiting diplomats. Among those present were General Chen Kaizeng, defense attache. People's Republic of China; minister Zhou Wenzhang, deputy chief of mission, People's Republic of China and General Randy House, military assistant to the Secretary of Defense. ^
