Election 1996
It was a short night for many as President Bill Clinton easily won reelection, but he will face another Republican controlled Congress.
Americans generally hope the spirit of cooperation that prevailed in the past Congress during the last year will return, rather than the nasty partisan wrangling that characterized the first year of the 104th Congress.
Locally something must be done to relieve the election workers. Having to count thousands of ballots after spending nearly 14 hours handling the actual vote is simply too much to ask of people. It is becoming increasingly difficult to find people willing to take on this duty.
Fewer and fewer precincts in the state have paper ballots. If Rappahannock can be an exception to the rule that precincts with over 750 voters must have voting machines, perhaps the county can also be an exception to the rule that the same people who supervise the election itself have to do the counting. .
If such a change is not possible and the county wishes to continue with paper ballots, more of the precincts need to be divided. The ' Castleton Fire Hall and the two schools are possible locations for extra precincts. Someone needs to come up with a suggestion for an additional precinct location in Jackson District.
