SMALL

DIMINISHMENTS

While a great deal of emphasis is commonly placed on the finality that death imposes upon life, it may be conveniently overlooked that we often engage in behavior that diminishes life in small, but cumulative, increments every day. For instance, failing to treat ourselves and others with the respect that we all deserve only drains us of our life force. It could be argued that, if this lack of respect were to continue long enough, it could exert the same life-depriving effect as death. As Mahatma Gandhi once wrote: "Fear has its use, but cowardice has none. I may not put my Fingers into the jaws of a snake, but the very sight of the snake need not strike terror in me. The trouble is that we often die many times before death overtakes us."
