strange bird sound seemed to come from everywhere and nowhere. “Rain crow! He says we’ll get rain before the day is over.” I remember we usually did. It also rained the day I heard the cuckoo while contemplating an abundance of yellow squash. * It was later, when the study of birds began to occupy me, that I learned the true name of the maker of the strange and unbirdlike summer sounds of my growing up years. I also learned that the “rain crow” is in the same family as the European cuckoo that makes the cuc-koo sounds imitated in clocks and by Beethoven in his sixth symphony. Oddly enough, I heard that symphony on the radio the same day I heard the yellow-billed cuckoo in the yard.
