“It is a story of unbelievable sacrifice and uncommon valor on the part of soldiers who felt strong allegiance to the South even though they had only recently come to America,” Gannon said. About two-thirds of the regiment’s men were foreign-bom, including the Irish and one company made up of German immigrants.
