The time is overdue for a
county discussion about Rappahannock’s steady escalation of barriers to affordable shelter — and thus to the people without the means to buy into our paradise.
The proposed new amendment to our code that a family apartment “shall in no case be a mobile home” simply reeks of unthinking elitism and snobbery. What could the county be thinking of? Where in the world should someone without the means to buy 25 acres, erect a new residence and jump through Rappahannock’s permit hoop’s live? The family with a suddenly ailing, frail grandparent or newlywed son who may require a temporary arrangement for several years until the son is on his feet or the grandparent dies — must this family invest $100,000 to shelter them? How is the environment protected by building a permanent structure when a temporary one
