Most people in the country are familiar with the recent devastation caused by forest fires in the state of Florida. But what was it like for those brave souls who dared to face down those raging infernos?
“The temperature ranged from 100 to 103 degrees, the humidity was about 82 perc«it and above and we worked in 12 hour shifts,” said George Swett, of Jenkins Hollow in Rappahannock who volunteered to help.
Swett is a professional firefighter with the Arlington Fire Department, a volunteer with the Sperryville Volunteer Fire Department, a forest fire warden for the State of Virginia and has worked with numerous search and rescue operations. “When the situation in Florida occurred the State of Virginia began putting together a task force to help there. Our fire chief in Arlington gathered information on the task force and told us they wanted two or three volunteers from each county and preferred those with some experience fighting forest fires.
