with saving the county though I wouldn’t say that was quite true. They were scared and they let us know it. The commissioner for Bay County wrote to Tallahassee and requested we be allowed to stay. They offered to pay us salaries, pay for the vehicles use and maintenance, provide our food and lodging, everything, until they were sure the fire was really out. That was really something. It made us feel great.”
Governor Jim Gilmore was on hand to see the task force off and crowds awaited their return on July 15. Swett said the recognition was nice but knowing they had made a “real difference” was what mattered most. “I’d do it again tomorrow if they asked,” he said.
