The towhee was on his back, when restraining fingers were relaxed, the bird looked around, suddenly righted himself, and darted to the bare limb of a tree. For a moment, he pecked at the band on his leg. Then with a flash of white tail feathers, he flew away in gracefully undulating flight and dissapeared into a thicket — a towhee’s favorite habitat. From there we heard a questioning, towhee? He called his name.
Exactly 10 years later, to the very day, a banded towhee was again trapped. It was the same bird! His plumage had even more luster than it had when he was first captured. This 10-year-old was indeed elegant. I asked myself: “,1s there any other animal that displays more splendor as it grows older?”
