There has been discussion about the money now used for Piedmont being used to help pay the annual debt payment, but there is at least a one-year overlap for the payment to Piedmont and the debt service. So that money won’t help in the first year anyway. And, new teachers will most likely have to be hired to teach the additional vocational courses planned for the future and additional courses which will be added to the curriculum as a result of the expansion.
County Administrator John McCarthy said the county has to be concerned with what the debt service will be next year, should the bond issue be approved, and what it will be for the next several years. As is the case with many home mortgages, for example, the interest is paid at the beginning and is variable although the principle is fixed.
There is not doubt that the high school needs more space and other capital improvements. Most assuredly the county does not want to raise tax rates any more than necessary. These are issues every resident must be concerned with and involved in.
It is true that many people are hesitant to attend board meetings or voice their opinions to their supervisors. It is also true that if you don’t voice your opinion no one will know what it is. And, if you expect the supervisors to listen to what you think, telling your neighbor or discussing the issue at a local store isn’t enough.
