Never mind, decided Light. This concept should be bigger than Woodville. The values Woodville is struggling to deepen — neighborliness, safety for children, preservation of beauty, religious faith
are ones shared by the entire county. Why not a county-wide celebration, focusing on reinforcing everybody’s s#nse of community? I By mid-August Mrs. Light was working as her husband’s hill-time lieutenant. While he was at his paying job near Dulles Airport, she made hundreds of phone calls.
By late August, the organizing committee had grown to 25 people, including representaT tives from the Rappahannock Historical Society, the Lion’s Club, and both churches in Woodville, Shiloh Baptist and Woodville Baptist.
Simply getting members of these churches under the same roof was unprecedented. Shiloh Baptist had been founded by blacks emerging from slavery in 1863, while Woodville Baptist, founded in 1852, had been the white church. As far as anybody could recall, members of the two churches had met and worshipped separately until this summer.
At Light’s instigation, the committee held meetings in each church. The blacks and whites of Woodville found they had much in common with each other, including deep pride in their homeplace.
