When Wood and Light saw Tepper’s design, it bore this simple inscription under the town’s name: “Circa 1798.”
“It suddenly dawned on us,” recalls Light. “We’re 200 years old this year!” Unfortunately it was already June, half-way through the bicentennial year.
Light had seen a small town in Germany celebrate its heritage with a magnificent parade that included floats and re-enactments of each major historical period back to caveman days. Why couldn’t Woodville do this?
Skeptics pointed to Woodville’s shrunken population. Though Woodville once bustled as a rural town, the community is down to a couple of dozen houses, two churches, one general store, a fruit stand, and a gift shop. Its zip code encompasses only 145 boxholders.
