His favorite themes for public murals are political and social commentary. He said the Washington, D. C. statuary, inspired him as he grew up, but Biblical and historical paintings also have a hand in shaping his subjects and style.

Thomas Cole of the Hudson River School and Hieronymus Bosch, an early Renaissance painter, both influenced him, Mullany said.

However, he is such a versatile painter that he is able to authentically imitate a number of different styles and defining limits to his talents is almost impossible.
