A farewell
Sheriff leaving but work will
go on} business as usual
Next week Gary Settle steps down from the
office sheriff of Rappahannock. He is a dedicated
leader who has always exhibited the utmost professionalism and has been extremely accessible to the public and the media.
Also to his credit, and to the credit of the personnel at the sheriff’s office, he has left behind a welltrained, motivated and fully capable staff.
He shall be sorely missed by all, no doubt, but his work ethic and the programs he helped put in place (such as all the grant supplements he has worked hard to secure) will hopefully be carried over into the new administration.

regs have drawn opposition
The proposed amendments to the county zoning
regulations concerning family apartments will
come before the board of supervisors for public hearing Dec. 7 at their 7 p.m. meeting.
Several items in the proposal were criticized by residents at the planning commission level. Specifically the ones which say: a family apartment can be occupied by no more than three people; and a family apartment may be no more than 50 feet from the main dwelling unless special exception is granted (and then up to 200 feet from the main dwelling). The three person limit is not a change from the present regulation but the 50 foot limit would be a change — the regulation now says within 200 feet of the main dwelling.
Residents who attended the planning commission hearing voiced concern over why the number of people in a family apartment should be limited to three. Certainly if a young family is using a family apartment and they have more than one child it presents a problem and seems an unfair restriction.
Also of concern was the privacy issue for anyone living in a family apartment if that apartment is required to be within 50 feet of the main dwelling.
