“It’s definitely a year of change and making adjustments,” said Laura Conklin, girls varsity volleyball coach and last year’s Coach of the Year for the District in volleyball.
Her sentiments were echoed by junior varsity coach Heidi Maeyer. “Most of my girls moved up and the team is mostly eighth graders this year but they’ve learned a lot in the little time they’ve been practicing.”
Tryouts and practices started three weeks ago and both Conklin and Maeyer think their teams have a great deal of talent this year.
“We lost some key players,” Conklin said, “but I have five returning from last year’s team — Meghan Fairbrother, Alice Gentry, Lauren Sharp, Janice Wilson and Claire Schadler. The team is hitting and serving really well but we need to work on our serve reception — that’s where we n£ed improvement and we’re wprking on that.” i Conklin said she thinks the team will be strong in the district and is definitely competitive.
