The sheriff’s office has increased its role in the public eye during Settle’s administration with programs like DARE Day, Shop with a Deputy and other community-oriented safety programs. Settle believes the opinion of the public toward the sheriff’s office is very positive and that he would like to see that continue after he leaves. ‘The staff we have here is very capable of carrying on with business as usual. The chief deputy will take over until a new sheriff is appointed. I'm not a micro-manager. I delegate authority. It was a new concept to the personnel here when I came. They were trained and I have no doubt they can carry on. There are people within the department who are very capable of doing this job. I’d hate to see someone come in and try to ‘re-invent the wheel.’ But whether the person appointed comes from within or from the outside I would hope things will progress.”
