-merit but more and more the sheriff’s job is administrative. There is a great deal of political pressure and accountability involved in that position. I hope the position will be filled by the judges in such a manner as will minimize disruption of the sheriff’s office.”
Luke also said he thinks Settle did an excellent job while in office and that it’s unfortunate he is leaving the office prior to completion of his term but understands Settle’s personal reasons for doing so. “He’s done a great job, I hate to see him go, but he’s doing what he considers best for his family,” he said.
“When I decided to run for sheriff I sold certain things to the public about what I wanted to do. Those were accountability — for officers and their actions and their responsibility for equipment — and training. I think this is one thing I’m most proud of with the exception of my people themselves. I could give you page after page of training we’ve provided. We brought in outside instructors through contacts I had and all our road deputies are now general instructors, with the exception of the ones who were recently hired. We have our own firearms course which is above state standards. All of those things make for a more self reliant and efficient department. We can handle things for ourselves which saves money.”
Settle feels his office has made real inroads in the area of securing grants. He has been able to supplement the budget by roughly $10,000 to $25,000 per year and sometimes more through grants he has applied for and received. They’ve gone a long way to securing additional training
