for deputies and other personnel, bought needed equipment and helped fund safety oriented community programs.

He said he was fortunate to inherit a good corps of people but they were also professionals who wanted to do more than they were currently doing and wanted training which had not been offered them. “I opened those doors and they jumped on board. They have grown, they feel good about it and have achieved a high degree of personal satisfaction with their jobs. Gary Settle didn’t do that — he was just a part of a team effort. I hope I’ve made employees here aware of that and of their abilities and accomplishments. What we’ve done here is an example of how they stepped up to the challenges and opportunities presented to them.”

The decision to return to the state police as a trooper — Settle was with the state police for 10 years prior to being elected sheriff— was a personal one, he said. The sheriff’s job is 24 hours a day and although he gave that time and commitment to the job, he said, he feels that it has taken its toll. He wants to be able to spend more time with his family, had decided not to run for re-election and a job came open with the state police, at the same time. He felt the opportunity was ripe — he decided to take the position.

“My decision though was not based on the job offers, I actually got two. The one with the state police and another with the Department of Justice for an assistant director’s position at a training center in Colorado. 1 turned that down but decided to take the job with the state police as it came at an opportune time,” he said.

Settle said he has been touched by the many calls of support he has received from people in the county. “It has been really heartwarming.”
