The school board passed the $7.8 million budget last night for the upcoming year.
The final version of the budget will cost county taxpayers $195,000 more than last year’s budget, but the school board members said they felt that they had kept costs at bay.
“I think we’ve done a good job keeping the budget down this year,” said board member Bryant Lee.
School superintendent Dr. David «&angel outlined some of the larger expenditures for the school board and the handful of residents at last night’s hearing.
Gangel stressed that some of the costs were geared toward keeping Rappahannock County schools in line with state mandates, such as the new Standards of Learning.
“These issues are with us now, and they’re going to he with us in the future,” Gangel said.
Some of the biggest expenses in the new budget included a 3.5% raise for teachers, payment on the bond for the additions to the high school, and repairs to the roof of Rappahannock County High School (see sidebar).
The residents present questioned school board members mostly on matters of infrastructure and administration.
Board members agreed to work toward keeping better track of mileage for school cars, something that has been a matter of some public concern lately. There was also some discussion of the roof repairs at the high school.
After less than an hour of discussion, however, the board voted, approving the new budget without opposition.
“The major increases are all what I would consider essential,” said chairman Dr. John Tble. “There’s no fat in that.”
