The battle continued for five full minutes in which the two tumbled over the ground and eventually fell off the stone wall onto the ground below, a drop of three feet. They were then quite close to me.
Before the fight, the Grackles had been so nervously aware of my presence they wouldn’t take advantage of the seed I had scattered. Now, the two birds ignored my presence. They were so close I could see that one had the other by the bill. With this grip it flipped the other bird on its back. A moment later one grackle had the other pinned to the ground; he (they were both males) stood on his back and viciously pecked his head. Surely, I thought, this bird could not survive this savage attack.
