Hackley’s

reopens

In 1934, a pound of “good cow round” sold at f Hackley’s Store in Amissville for ten cents.
There isn’t any “good cow round” for sale at the newly reopened store, but it does offer a freshly painted, orderly, inviting place full of dry goods, hardware, groceries and handdipped ice cream.
And one is sure to find the broad smiles of the young proprietor, Brad Nicholas, and his 1 assistant, Sabrina Hibbitts.
Nicholas reopened the store on March 18 after a few months of extensive and intensive clean-up and reorganization. He was aided by his father, brother, cousins and friends, and by the former owners, Mr. and Mrs. E. G.

Living the dream
The old wood stove is gone, replaced by a new heating system. Also in place are new refrigerators, new food service equipment, a new hand-dipped ice cream display case, new ceiling in the storage room, new paint on the block walls, and new counter tops.
Nicholas, a 1989 graduate of Rappahannock County High School, worked at Hackley’s for six years while he was a student. He said that he always wanted to run the store.
He left eight years ago to work at Ross Industries in a variety of positions: manufacturing clerk, expediter, purchasing agent, machinist.
His experience at Ross will undoubtedly stand him in good stead at Hackley’s — though a different industry, some of the fundamental business issues are the same.
A popular place
During renovations, many people peeked in to the old store to see what was going on and what was changing. There were few, if any, grumbles about the renovation and reorganization. .
As before, Hackley’s Store will be selling general merchandise and groceries, seasonal items (seed potatoes and onion sets sat on the porch ready for planting), ice cream, and madeto-order sandwiches.
