When it comes to book buying, nothing appeals to Rappahannock County readers like a book about a local subject or by a local author.
The end of the year 2000 brings our second annual best-sellers list, generated by the trusty computer at The Old Sperryville Bookshop. After keeping track of every book sold this year, the computer has just cranked out the Top Ten Best Sellers of 2000.
And once again, the list is dominated by books with a strong local flavor, though it also includes nonlocal books on subjects as diverse as trees, disaster survival, spirituality and magic.
Here are the top ten best-sellers for the year 2000:
• The Inn at Little Washington: An Insider s Look at the Famed Restaurant and its Cuisine, by Jay Levin ($27.95). Published in midyear, this richly illustrated book about Rappahannock County's most famous business soared to the top of our list in just seven months. It's a behind-the-scenes look at the famous Inn and its owners, and how they turned an old country storq and garage into a world-renowned restaurant. It combines the beauty of a coffee table book with the gossip of a celebrity magazine. A great gift book for anyone who has ever eaten at the Inn—or wished they could.
• Irish Rebels, Confederate Tigers, by James P. Gannon ($32.95). This history of a mostly Irish regiment of Confederate soldiers from New Orleans was bumped from its number one ranking of 1999, despite relentless promotion of the book by its author, who happens to own the bookstore.
