All the attention was focused last year on the new millennium in which, for the first time in everyone's memory, the new year would not begin with the number 1. It was the end of the 1900s and the start of the 2000s.
Some of the eager promoters wanted to look just a bit further: There was some talk of the new 21st century and the new 3rd millennium. But of course, everyone who actually counted to 20, or 2000, noticed that the number ends in 0 and not with a 9. The 20th century that we had all be living in so long, had started with 1901 and it didn't really end with 1999, but Sunday really is the last day of the 20th century we have been so anxious to put behind us.
New Year's Day really is the first day of the 21st century, and simultaneously the new 3rd millennium.
