A sneaky telephone scam with a new twist has been reported recently to the ^Rappahannock County -Sheriffs office, and Sheriff Larry Sherertz is urging county residents to be extremely careful when following through to calls they are •Uncertain or confused about.
The complaint was made earlier this month by a county •resident who had received about 15 calls, during which she was told to call a toll-free 300- or 888- number to get an urgent message from "Mary," "Bill" or another familiar name that could be a legitimate caller.
When the woman tried to interrupt the caller, she real• ized that the convincing voice , on the other end of the line •qras a recording. , , Instead of calling the "toll-free" number, she called the 'Consumer Affairs Office in the • .Virginia Attorney General's , Office, which determined that .indeed, a phone scam was being perpetrated.
