settia sale and gift baskets we will decide whether to have further fund raisers. We are looking for activities for the remainder of the school year, apart from fund raisers. Continue the brainstorming - remember the rule for the brainstorming phase is ... any and all ideas accepted without criticism. That criticism and throwing out of impractical, or otherwise undo-able stuff happens at a later stage when we narrow the choices. Your very own cherished idea or pet project may be ideal for the PTO to take on for the betterment of the school.
The following ideas were floated (the last was the most popular):
1. A co-sponsored forum with the First Thursday group (still in planning stages).
2. The Buttercup Ball we have tentatively decided to sponsor around May.
3. Assistance with the Accelerated Reader program the school has begun. This program is a series of tests students take on a computer, each test for a specific book. Points are assigned for passing a test, and should be used as incentives, perhaps with some donated gift items from community sponsorship. The school has purchased a starter set, and additional units will cost more. PTO involvement could assist at several levels with this program. There is also an Accelerated Math pro- . gram, which the school is not currently involved in.
4. Work on the school's drinking water supply. Though perfectly safe and regularly tested to prove this, the water has a brown tint and is distasteful to some of the staff and students. Some kind of bottled water supply, automatically served from a few bubblers (no cups!) would be a solution - this would require further research.
5. Assisting the new Rappahannock County School Sports Association in developing feeder sports programs in the elementary school.
6. I've saved the best for last: easily the most popular idea proposed. A community service event geared to kids, for the benefit of a major charity or cause. Example: a jump rope for the heart event. Criteria that are desirable are that it involve a child’s activity and that it teach volunteerism by example.
The PTO is actively seeking a volunteer to research and help form this idea for further action.
