There are many jays in North America including the Scrub Jay, found in the west, the Steller's Jay and Pinyon Jays found in the western mountains, and well-known to many in Rappahannock county, the eastern Blue Jay. Regardless where you live in our area, you will most likely have a visit from one of our local eastern Blue Jays.
The Blue Jay is a member of the crow family. All members in this family share similar traits such as a raucous song and calls, strong heavy bills and an appetite for just about anything whether it is plant or animal. It is believed by many that crows and jays are some of the smartest birds in the world.
Most jays live year round in their chosen territory, except for our eastern Blue Jay, which moves slightly northward during the breeding season.
Jays won't nest in birdhouses, but construct large, open shelf nests.
They prefer sticks and twigs for nesting materials. Since building a nest can take hundreds of trips, you can offer a pile of sticks and twigs nearby to help them out: They will also line their nests with grasses and mud.
