Butterflies captivate and delight more people than any other insect.
Found on all continents of the world except Antarctica, the Lepidoptera order contains over 15.000 species of butterflies and over 150.000 species of moths.
Lepidoptera comes from the Greeks and means scaly wings. Butterflies come in a rainbow of colors. But like many things in nature, what you see is not always what you get. Butterfly wings are actually clear or transparent.
They are covered with thousands of tiny scales, each the outgrowth of a single cell, which gives the wings their color. Most butterflies average about 125,000 scales per square inch. You might have noticed this if you have ever handled a butterfly.
The scales are easily rubbed off leaving a “powder” on your hands.
Normally I would not be as detailed but the life cycle of butterflies are so unusual that I think you will be amazed at what it takes to make one beautiful butterfly. Butterflies undergo a complete transformation in which they go through four different life stages. It takes about a month for the egg to mature into an adult.
A butterfly starts its life as an egg. The female Tiger Swallowtail butterfly lays its round, yellow-green eggs on a leaf high in a tulip tree, sweet bay, wild black cherry, ash, lilac, birch, or choke cherry. When
