Memorial Day is much more than a three day weekend that marks the beginning of summer. Many amusement parks that have only been open on weekends since April, are now open everyday. The swimming pools have also opened.
The real reason for Memorial Day is to remind all of us of the men and women who have died in service for our country.
There are many National Cemeteries that hold special services in remembrance of all those who have given their life in battle for America. The National Cemeteries also place a flag by each grave.
General James Garfield was the speaker at the first observance at Arlington National Cemetery on May 30, 1868.
There is some question about the origin of Memorial Day.
In 1865, Henry C. Willis of Waterloo, N.Y., said at a gathering that they should show honor to the Civil War dead, by decorating their graves. This is why it was known as “Decoration Day”.
