before pupa stage it sometimes turns brown.

The pupa stage is a resting stage. As the body transforms into a butterfly, it does not eat or drink at this time.

In the fourth and final stage, a beautiful, flying adult emerges. There is no growth during this stage, but the butterfly will sip nectar. This adult will continue the cycle by reproducing. Females will produce two or three broods in our area, the first as early as March and the second in July and can be seen through September.

Tiger Swallowtail males often fly along roads and streams at all heights.

During spring, large numbers of males gather at moist places around roads and stream edges.

No matter what the species, butterflies are most active when temperatures are warm. They fly best when temperatures are between 8595 degrees. When air temperatures are below this the butterfly needs to bask in the sun to warm its body.

I have seen this behavior on cloudy days or early in spring. Basking is done either on the ground or a flower. The butterfly will open its wings and turn toward the warming rays of the sun. When sufficiently warmed it will fly away.
