Sunday picnic

The Rappahannock Historical Society’s annual membership meeting and picnic will be held (rain or shine) on Sunday, Aug. 5 from 4:30 p.m. to dusk at the Tiger Valley home of board member Col. John Bourgeois, former director of “The President’s Own" U.S. Marine Band.
Those persons interested in joining the historical society also are encouraged to attend the festivities at “Metairie”, the home of Col. Bourgeois, located at 220 Hunters Road.
There will be a special program by society member Richard Dols who has extensively researched the story of “Rappahannock’s “Black Flag* “. Dols will tell of the Rappahannock Old Guard’s triumph over Federal forces at Cedarville, Via., on May 23, 1862, the first and only time the “black flag” was carried into battle by the Guard. He will conclude his talk with a special presentation to the society’s new Museum Room collection.
Col. Bourgeois will provide his smoked chicken speciality for all. Members are asked to bring a covered dish, salad, or dessert to share and a lawn chair for comfort.
Members and guests will gather at Col. Bourgeois’ home at 4:30 p.m. The membership meeting will be called
