with wire grates or some other device to stop the birds. This can be a selfdefeating activity, because if you maintain a chimney to attract swifts instead of denying them, you will clean your chimney and the accumulated creosote that forms on a more regular basis.
The best time to clean a chimney is in mid-March when the wood fire season is over and just before the swifts return from the Amazon Basin wintering grounds. Creosote coated chimneys are a major fire hazard.
