Hanks, who took a year off and lost 50 pounds between shooting the movie’s first and second half, keeps quietly surprising you. Most memorable, watch when Chuck comes to after the crash and discovers he’s still alive. Hanks doesn’t yell or scream, he just breathes and breathes great, huge, life-savoring gulps of air. The movie dissolves irony; as much as possible it brings us back to the essence of our physical existence. It’s superb. (PG-13, 144 minutes)
