The bee shortage started in the mid 1980’s when the mite, varroa came from Asia. It had been kept in check by chemically treated strips that were placed in the hives. The farmers found the bees had developed a resistance to the pesticide.
Keepers have tried to replenish their bees by buying new queen bees through the mail, then split their surviving hives among the new queens.
Most bee keepers have built up their strength this year, but they’re not making much of a crop of honey.
There is some honey available from local farmers and fruit stands. It is an important ingredient in many recipes.
