For the third year in a row, there was rain at Rappahannock’s annual Relay for Life. The Relay took place as scheduled last Friday evening through Saturday morning at the Rappahannock Elementary School. But this time the rain held off until after the Midnight Madness and only the final hours of the Relay and breakfast were dampened by the rain. But nothing dampened the enthusiasm of the walkers and most were prepared for the rain.
Opening ceremonies began outside the Elementary School with Jeff Light singing the Star Spangled Banner. Chairman Ben Atkins introduced the Relay chairs, team captains, and members of the Rappahannock County Board of the American Cancer Society and then Rev. Phillip Bailey delivered a prayer of gratitude for God’s blessings and for the occasion and the participants.
Shawn Majors and Kevin Broome were introduced by Master of Ceremonies Jeff Light to sing “On the Wings of a Snow White Dove” while Mark Bhein of Cornucopia Farm released about 40 white doves. Dr. Werner Krebsner gave a brief talk about being a cancer survivor.
There was a brief ceremony in honor of the cancer survivors and then the survivors began the Relay by walking the first lap as their names and length of time as a survivor was announced. The survivors carried purple “Relay” balloons and released them as they completed the circuit.
The Relay then continued with some participants walking the track and others picnicking around the track. Food was served from the cafeteria because of the threatening weather. Entertainment included a puppet show, a DJ and
