Artist Ned Bittinger, formerly of Rappahannock County, has a new book just published by Scholastic Press. “When the Root Children Wake Up" is based on an old German folk tale,, a fantasy featuring fairy-like children who hibernate with Mother Earth during winter and awake with spring.
The book reproduces the artist’s beautiful, colorful oil paintings of the “root children" and their activities through spring, summer and fall. Their frolicsome activities with the animals of the forest and Aunt Spring, Cousin Summer and Uncle Fall tell the story of the seasons and nature’s everchanging beauties.
Mr. Bittinger, who now lives in Santa Fe, NM, has illustrated several popular children’s books, including Rocking Horse Christmas and Blue and Gray, a book for children about the Civil War. He was in Sperryville briefly this month and signed some copies of his latest book.
