Farm work was six days a week, sunrise to sunset lifestyle. Children made ap their own games, things that required little or no expense or equipment. Music was homemade; whoever could play a fiddle or banjo might play at social gatherings, occasional community picnics and the like. There was hunting and fishing for those inclined toward those activities. Of course, the few wealthier people in the cqmmunity had more options, more money to spend, hired hands to do the manual labor, more opportunities for advancement. But this group was small, mainly a few large landowners.
