The artistic maternal grafldrriother “was alv lys a major part of my life” said Ms. Richards, when asked what earlier influences led to her painting abilities. She has also painted some very beautiful landscapes, though she modestly dismisses them as “Sunday painting”. Ms. Richards took a drawing class at the Ecole des Beaux Artes in Paris and actually did paint the French countryside on weekends, through the French branch of Parson’s School of Design, so she is being somewhat truthful,
A tabletop in progress evokes something of the French countryside Ms. Richards now misses. Intended to be set into a metal base, the circular design consists mainly of four large herb pots, oriented to the four cardinal directions and looks like a mandala, redolent of fresh air, thyme, lavender and oregano. A completed, smaller, rectangular table shows a Tree of Life with two fanciful birds and rimmed with multicolor tiles. Slightly tongue-in-cheek is the miniature “Persian rug”, complete with fringe, which would be a wonderful floor inlay near a front or side door threshold.
Inventive use of tiles can be seen throughout Ms. Richards’ house: adhered as a border around the glass window of her front door, marking the numerical address on her mailbox and propped against the lower step of her front porch, looking like an offering or shrine to the spirits of nature.
Ms. Richards’ tiles do end up in other people’s houses, too. Recent commissions include a farmhouse kitchen mural, illustrating scenes from Flint Hill, Little Washington
