and the owner’s farm. A Slate Mills house addition now boasts bath tiles sporting exquisite geraniums and in the kitchen, Ms. Richards’ signature, whimsical birds, peacocks, roosters and guinea hens roam freely.
Deviating from the tile form, Ms. Richards’ current favorite project is shoes, three —dimensional decorative pieces inspired by the footwear of her female Irish relatives seen at a recent family reunion. Shoes seemed natural as “clay at a certain stage is like leather. It’s not by chance they call it leather hard," Ms. Richards remarks. An interesting anecdote also came from the reunion: Ms. Richards’ business, Majoli, has not only clever references to Majolica and pronunciation (sounds like “ma jolie" in French), it is formed from two initials from each of her three children's names. Her newly met Irish cousin Lily, a painter, recently formed a business partnership and its name “Cajoli” is also an anagram of the three women’s names.
Ms. Richards’ work can be found for sale at Blue Ridge Artisans in Sperryville and she will have a few pieces in the Middle Street Gallery’s Christmas show. Studio appointments are another way to view Ms. Richards’ tile genius and to commission work.
