There are about as many phone scams going around now as there are ornaments on a Christmas tree.
One of them came to the attention of Rappahannock County Sheriff Larry Sherertz last week when his office received a phone call from a concerned homeowner in the Chester Gap area whose wife had received a suspicious phone call after dinner.
An unknown person called her and said he wanted to upgrade the files on her magazine subscription, recalled the sheriff.
The caller said he was in the security files section and needed to confirm certain information. The caller said he wanted to verify the woman’s name, date of birth and credit card number.
“The caller also said he wanted her mother’s name,” said Sheriff Sherertz."They are getting very brazen now.”
