The couple from Castleton “were astute enough” to ask for the the caller’s name and call back number.
Sheriff Sherertz said he wants to warn people not to give out any personal information about themselves such as their date of birth, social security number, bank account information and credit card numbers over the telephone.
“And any person who refuses to give a name or call back number is highly suspect,” said the sheriff.
The scams which have been played on residents of Rappahannock County are typical of scams occurring throughout the state.
Stuart Ashby, who for 27 years has investigated phone scams in Virginia, and now is manager of the state unit which counsels victims and also oversees the office, gives this advice:
“There is no free lunch. If it sounds too good, probably it is. No legitimate operation or bank is going to ask you for your credit card number when they call you,” said Mr. Ashby, who is manager of Counseling, Intake and Referral for the Office of Consumer Affairs of the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.
