Two of New York’s celebrated jazz musicians open the new season at the Theatre at Washington on Sunday, Jan. 12 at 3 p.m.
Pianist Bill Charlap will be giving his fourth concert at the Theatre, and this time he will be accompanied by Jon Gordon on the saxophone. . Charlap and Gordon became friends when they were students at the High School for the Performing Arts in New York City. Since then they have both become soloists in their own right but continue to enjoy playing together.
In 2001, they released a duo recording, “Contrasts,” made up mostly of jazz standards, including music of Hoagy Carmichael, Thelonius Monk, and Harold Arlen, as well as a couple of compositions by Charlap and Gordon themselves. Some of this music will undoubtedly be heard at the Jan. 12 concert in Little Washington.
Though Charlap has been known throughout the jazz world as an accomplished pianist for many years, both The New York Times and Jazz Times have indicated that his career has recently reached new heights. !
