The Madison County Democratic Committee announced it will have a candidate forum at 10 a.m. on Feb. 7 and all the candidates or representatives will attend. It will be held at the Madison Presbyterian Church on Route 29 at Fishback Road. Frank Dixon a spokesman for the event said that Madison County had conducted a telephone survey to identify the 250 or so Democrats.
Linda Dietel, vice chairman of the Rappahannock County Democratic Committee, said that interest in the primary was brisk and they "expected a good turnout." She said that the Democrats were presenting a "Move On" compact disk show at The Theatre in Washington on Sunday, Feb. 8 at 2 p.m., to which Democrats and independent voters throughout the area were invited. The CD - on President Bush’s Iraq policy, would be the opening point for discussions (and refreshments). In the primary, she said, the Democrats believe that many independents will come out and vote.
Bland said that identifying the party’s core constituency is crucial in Virginia where voters do not register by party. The party uses a program called “Prevail” to build a database on Democratic voters and identify others who may be persuaded to back Democratic issues. In the last election for attorney general and lieutenant governor, some 168,000 Democrats came to the polls and she expects that number or more will vote in the primary.
