Students at Rappahannock County’s high school and elementary school are putting last minute touches on their boards for this year’s local Science Fair, which is slated for Wednesday, Feb. 11 and Thursday, Feb. 12 in the RCES gym.

A program is planned at RCHS on Friday, Feb. 13 to recognize the winners. The judges should have a difficult task with the large number of projects as well as creativity and quality.

At the senior division level, the nature of projects depends on the class in which the student is enrolled. For instance, Mrs. Waddell’s 10th grade honors biology class submitted biology projects, while David Naser s 12th grade physics class conducted projects related to physics or engineering.

Among the biology projects were some plant studies, including “Death by Flytrap” by Michael Bailey; “The Impact of Different Types of Soil in Radishes” by Rocio Loya; “Let it grow, Let it grow,” a study on organic fertilizers by Kevin Martin; and “Deficiencies and Excesses of Micronutrients in Bean Plants” by Allison Antony.

Some biology students studied animals or human subjects. Projects include “Worms, Worms, and More Worms” by Bethany Dodson; “The Effect of Outdoor Household Chemicals on Invertebrate Pond Life” by Luke Wilson and “Phalanges in the Family” by Ashleigh Lamma, a study of fingerprint patterns within families.

For the physics entries, some exciting projects are “The Effect of Temperature on the Coefficient of Restitution of Golf balls” by Brian Taylor; “Do Solar Ovens Cook Food More Rapidly than Conventional Ovens?” by Sara Hathaway; “Acceleration of a Twirling Yo-Yo” by David Letsen; “Multiple Surface Resistances” by Brittany Thornhill.
