I asked the Quaker Oats people via e-mail why they used a round container, when almost all other cereal comes in a box. They thanked me for my “OatMail” and said, “At one time, oats were only available in bulk and were sold out of barrels at the general store. When the Quaker Oats product was first introduced, the cylindrical box was meant to mimic the barrels.” Now you know.

You can use eggs, as did Mao, or a non-yolk brand like Eggbeaters, something Mao never heard of. For a six-serving batch of oatmeal, add four beaten eggs plus the oatmeal to boiling water and simmer until everything is thick. Serve it with condensed milk, which comes in a small can and pours very thickly, like a ribbon.
