Rappahannock outvoted not only its neighbors in the region but also the state as a whole as U. S. Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) trounced his Democratic rivals, winning big in Rappahannock and every region in the state. Some 12.97 percent of registered voters in Rappahannock went to the polls while less than 10 percent of registered voters in neighboring counties and across the state turned out to vote, according to unofficial election results. My mother decided that spending long summer vacations in town with me in semi-tropical heat was not good for either of ins. One day she saw a real estate advertisement for 26 acres in Rappahannock County with a small house by a stream. The next Saturday the seller drove us to the . property. It was four miles from a ’paved highway-over a bumpy and curvy dirt road, bordering the most beautiful stream I had ever seen. We looked around. My mother peered through adult eyes at waist-high weeds at a small four-room run-down house that had1 n’t seen fresh paint for decades. The front 'door was four feet off the ground because the porch had rotted away. In back she saw the remains of an old chicken coop. A path through the weeds led to a small shack where she could see the hole in the seat through the open door, hanging by one hinge. Do we have a lot of bird enthusiasts in Rappahannock County. A great outpouring of sightings and observations were sent in after the Rappahannock News announced the new “Birds of Rappahannock” column in its Jan. 29 ed'tion. We have reports from just about every comer of Rappahannock and we thought you would enjoy hearing about a few of the sightings. Ed and Gayle Connelly sighted a Bald Eagle on Route 647; so did Lois Manookian on Tiger Valley Road. Jennie Millan and daughter Natalie, 11, sighted a Bald Eagle on Route 681, just off Route 231. All three sightings were of mature Bald Eagles (three years or older), as they displayed the pure white head and tail. Mary Ann Kammes sent in two reports from the Slate Mills area. This one is a male. reported some interesting species. She saw a Brown Thrasher in a Dogwood tree by her house. . .now this guy/gal should have gone south many months ago. She also added an Eastern Tbwhee, Hermit Thrush, and a Yellow Bellied Sapsucker (the woodpecker that comes south to us during the winter); a flock of 50-60 American Robins were also noted. Margy White, near Sperryville, saw a Belted Kingfisher flying around and around her frozen pond. She was asking the appropriate question: “What is there for that guy to eat?” Kingfishers are exclusively fish eaters. Donna Kern added, as one of many bird sightings, the Screech Owl (Red Phase), that nests on her property, and then she verified it with a digital photo. Horrock Rappahannock News Staff Writer Rappahannock County Sheriff Larry Sherertz sent two dispatchers to an “advanced fire service dispatch” course in Williamsburg in January as part of what he said is a “pro-active program” to keep his team of six dispatchers up to date with fire and rescue training. He is also planning to begin inservice training for the dispatchers, all of whom are women, to be conducted by Capt. Sheila Scott, the chief dispatcher and a certified training officer and Major Chris Williams, also a certified trainer. I he course was conducted Jan. 19 and 20 by PowerPhone, one of the largest professional emergency training companies in the country. The company’s spokesman, Greg Sheehan said PowerPhone has trained 110,000 emergency communicators nationwide and recentlycompleted an assessment of the United Nations command and control center. The training came as Rappahannock’s fire dispatch system came under criticism from some fire officials who said the dispatchers were sometimes unfamiliar with fire and rescue methodology, distracted by other duties and made crucial errors. Sherertz has always maintained his dispatchers are the hardest working personnel in his depart ment. He acknowledges that thenduties as matrons in a jail where there are often women prisoners and handling other telephone calls can be hard to manage in an emer The PowerPhone course uses 911 tapes from what PowerPhone claims is the “world's largest private library of 911 calls" and “features actual 911 tapes that never have been heard in the classroom." Sheehan said in a telephone interview from the company’s Madison, Conn, headquarters that the courses are taught by veteran instructors with 20 or more years of experience “on both sides of the radio" as dispatchers and fire fighters. The course, he said, deals with handling large disaster response, such as chemical disasters. But it also concentrates on how to assist a caller and how to prepare for the arrival of responders. He said the course instructs the dispatcher on “pre-arrival assistance." It teaches what information dispatchers need to obtain from the caller such as “behavioral factors of the fire," how completely engaged it is and whether hazardous materials, firearms or other dangers are present. Rappahannock wrestlers win state championship By Hodge Miller Special to the Rappahannock News Two Rappahannock Middle School wrestlers came home state champions in a recent statewide wrestling championship. Gregory Flournoy, a fifth grader who came home with a gold medal, wrestled in the 65 lb fifth-sixth grade division. Conner Miller, a sixth grader also came up with a gold. Conner wrestled in the 80 lb fifth - sixth grade division. Two others, Jeff Booher and Ben Pendleton, who have wrestled the last two years for the Rappahannock County Middle School team, wrestled with the best from across the state and both finished with a record of one win and two losses. These four wrestlers traveled to Old Dominion University on Jan. 30 to compete in the Virginia Challenge Middle School Wrestling Championships. Over 810 wrestlers from across Virginia converged on the ODU Fieldhouse to vie for top honors. The Virginia Challenge pits wrestlers from AAA, AA, and A schools in one pool for top wrestling honors. To achieve his gold medal, fifth grader Flournoy faced off with 24 opponents in his bracket from across the state. He easily beat Gage Swartz from the Willie Walters Wrestling Club by a score of 13-1 to advance. Then, he faced off with Seth Henson from the Bull Run Wrestling Club. Flournoy was leading 13-2 when he reversed Henson in the third period and pinned him. In the semi-final round Flournoy faced Caleb Richardson from the Great Neck Wrestling Club. The match was a close one but Flournoy prevailed and won 4-2 to advance to the state finals. The finals pitted Flournoy against Dillon Knight who had earlier knocked off the # 1 seed. Knight came out strong recording the initial takedown to lead 2-0, only to loose two penalty points for locking hands to tie the score at 2-2. Flournoy was then able to hit a switch for a reversal to lead 4-2, only to have Knight record an escape to close the gap to 4-3. Knight again was able to escape again to tie the score at 4-4. In the third period Flournoy chose down and again Knight locked hands for the third time resulting in a two point penalty to bring the final score to 6-4, for the state title. At the tournament’s end, Flournoy was named Outstanding Wrestler under 100 lbs. in the fifth-sixth grade division. Sixth grader Miller, who wrestled in the 80 lb. fifthsixth grade division, had 35 wrestlers in his bracket, one of the largest in the tournament. In his first match Miller faced Tyler Desper from Fort Defiance. Miller won easily, recording a pin in the opening period. Next he faced Mike Beyvodt from the Kempsville Wrestling Club. Miller quickly pinned him in the first period. In the quarterfinals Miller faced off with Turner Bishop from Great Neck. Miller won 5-1 to advance to the semi-finals. In the semi-finals he met the number three seed Brandon Hogdahl from Stafford. Miller won a 7-2 decision to advance to the finals. The finals pitted Miller against the # 1 seed Aaron Runzo of the Kellam Mat Rats, for the state title. Runzo recorded the first takedown to go up two to zero and rode out the remaining time in the opening round. He chose neutral in the second round and came after Miller again. But this time Miller was able to take Runzo down and quickly covered for a pin and the state title. inese tour Rappahannock wrestlers have been bitten by the wrestling bug and are competing on the elite Culpeper Cobra’s Wrestling Club. The Cobra’s, coached by Roy Haun and Eric Brown of Culpeper, took 11 wrestlers to ODU and came home with four state titles, one second place, one fifth place and one sixth place finisher. You can expect to hear much more about these fine young wrestlers in the future with great coaches like Roy and Eric guiding them. Over A. Athe past several years, the General Assembly has taken encouraging steps to strengthen Virginia’s Freedom of Information Act, mainly through studying and carefully evaluating the exemptions to that law. This has proven to be the only effective antidote for the cynicism and suspicion that is bred by the closed meetings and secret votes of the past. And as goes the General Assembly, so go county, city and town-elected bodies. That being said, we were surprised that House Bill 1357 passed the House of Delegates last week, by a margin of 52 to 48, and that’s no mandate. At its worst, HB 1357 could be used to close any meeting of the General Assembly, by order of the Joint Rules Committee. This bill now goes to the Senate. Given the fact that the vote was so close, it is hoped that a large majority of the senators will reject it. Failing that, Governor Mark Warner should veto the bill. We are pleased that most of our representatives in Richmond, including Rappahannock’s delegate Allen Louderback (R-15th) and delegates Clay Athey (R18th) and Mark Cole (R-88th) voted against HB 1357 in the House, and Senator Russ Potts Jr. (R-27th) will vote against it when it comes before him. While they may not like the extra burden of care required by the Virginia FOIA, they realize that HB 1357 is not the way to deal with it. Delegate Scott Lingamfelter (R-31st) voted for the bill. He notes that the FOIA places much greater demands on the legislative branch than the judicial or executive branches. But that is a burden our lawmakers must bear, as our closest and most direct representatives. While we disagree with Lingamfelter’s vote on this bill, we don’t question his motives. A *&** Itfcery**ia<T'' I HOUSE* DELEGATES / Letters ‘One would hope the Board of Supervisors will.. .set the record straight’ T suppose now that the JLRappahannock News has acquired a new reporter with such impressive credentials, every muttering in the county will take on greater prominence. The banner headlines afforded Ron Frazier’s “excoriating attack” on a respected and hard-working fellow citizen (and, incidentally, also a public servant) bordered on sensationalism totally foreign to what we expect from our community newspaper. Mr. Frazier’s characterization of Ms. Silver as having had “her mind polluted” by anyone is as nonsensical as it is offensive. Neither Mr. Horrock, nor the newspaper, did either a favor by giving such extraordinary prominence to the gratuitous and insulting remarks of this long-time political thorn in the side of the county. By most accounts (except Mr. Frazier’s) the application in question was never the “focus of the meeting” at the library. Mr. Horrock should have checked his facts more carefully. It wouldn’t take a lot of research. He had only to read his own article. The grant request was mentioned in introductory remarks at the library meeting, but in no detail. It was by no means the “focus” of the meeting. It was not publicly distributed and very few people knew of the specific contents of the document at that tune. That the details wer<wiot discussed at the meeting’s attested to by Mr. Horrock’s own article, which quotes Mr. Frazier saying that he got a copy “after the meeting.” So, when Mr. Frazier—with great indignation—told the board that the “focus of the meeting concerned the grant proposal submitted by our very own grant writer and Headwaters’ for federal funds for this Center,” he consciously mislead the board and his constituents. Had Mr. Horrock caught this, the article might have been even more lurid than it was ... and accurate. The disproportionate coverage of Ron Frazier’s over-reaction to Amy Silver’s “concept paper” needlessly stirred-up a hornet’s nest of resentment and bad feeling in the county. It should be the mission of the paper to provide information that helps our citizens understand. not infuriate, each other. That Ms. Silver, or anyone of the organizing group involved—especially Bill and Linda Dietel—would do anything that they did not sincerely believe to be in the best interest of the county and its citizens is incomprehensible to anyone who is even vaguely acquainted with these outstanding citizens and their continuing commitment and contribution to this community. The truth is Amy Silver’s defense. Many of the points made by Ms. Silver in her paper are difficulties or inconveniences that most see as acceptable trade-offs. That we have no supermarket, for example, is a matter of pride to many. That jobs are few and housing is scarce and expensive — may come as a surprise to Mr. Frazier but to no one else that is out and about in the county. Most of the examples listed in the paper that supposedly “denigrate Rappahannock County” do no such thing. We all enjoy the scenery and the rural ambiance of the county, but it would be less than honest to fail to acknowledge the sacrifices we make for that. A lot of those things to which a reader of Ms. Silver’s paper might say, “poor Rappahannock...” many in the county revel in, brag about, treasure. The only “denigrating” aspect of Ms. Silver’s characterization of the county is the fact that Ms. Silver’s work highlights, however unintentionally, the abject failure of some of our county leadership, especially Mr. Frazier’s, as he most frequently leads the opposition to repeated attempts to address the basic educational and recreational needs of our community. No wonder he’s cranky. The citizens Mr. Frazier fears have been “infuriated” may well feel they are being stiffed or short-changed. The litany of failure Mr. Silver innocently brought to light is not her failure but the failure of those in the position to do something about it—like Mr. Frazier. Shall we let him “shoot the messenger?” That Mr. Frazier thinks, because a person works in a similar capacity to their work for the county, that their own personal work must be subject to his review and censorship is disconcerting to say the very least. But the fact that Mr. Frazier thinks that he can rip the livelihood from any county employee for stating an obvious truth betrays the hubris of j someone who has been in office far too long. One would hope the Board of Supervisors will take the time to get the facts and set the record straight, speak to Ms. Silver and Headwaters, and until they have done so, postpone any action that may have been instigated at Mr. Frazier’s behest. Bill Tieckelmann Washington ‘Only lightning rods we need are those we put on our barns’ I received two very pleasant telephone calls within the last 30 days. The first came on Jan. 11 at 2:30 in the morning. It was from the Rappahannock County Sheriffs Office, Deputy Deavers. I had had a controlled bum going for most of that previous day and a deputy on patrol in the early morning hours had noticed smoke coming from somewhere on my property. The deputy called it in to Ms. Deavers; she then called me to “make sure everything was alright.” The second came from an elderly person living in our county. She wanted to thank me for writing the letter to the Rappahannock News “Sour Grapes” defending the Sheriff’s deputies. She said if she doesn’t fall the Sheriff’s Office by 11 a.m., a deputy would come to her house to check on her. How many of those type calls are made by the Sheriff’s Office a day, week, month, or year? The choice to vote for Sheriff was put in front of the citizens of our county in November. We voted for whom we trusted and for the services they provide. And I’ll accept a few errors by our Sheriff’s Office in exchange for the way of life we all enjoy in this county. I don’t have to lock my front door at night, or my car for that matter. My children can play outside without fear. Our students aren’t being gunned down in the school cafeteria or forced to walk through metal detectors. We owe a great deal of those little pleasures to Sheriff Sherertz and his deputies. Thanks to them, the only storms we have in Rappahannock bring precipitation and the only lightning rods we need are those we put on our bams. Mark Raiford Amissville ‘Solutions ... should be worked openly’ ; The front page article, “Grant request sparks battle” in the Feb. 5 issue of the Rappahannock News alarmed me sufficiently' to provoke the first letter I have ever written to the editor. To usurp the right, over our elected officials, to speak for the entire county via a written proposal sent to an outside agency without proper review or approval is outrageous. I realize that our county’s limited tax base is a challenge in terms of public funding for schools and services. However, I believe solutions to this challenge should be worked openly through our elected officials, rather than blindly (and by being blindsided) by the unreviewed and unapproved opinions and actions of volunteer groups. The assumption behind the proposal is that all the county’s woes are based solely upon lack of money. Is that true? What are the objective facts concerning county demographics, management and finances? Are there other reasons contributing to inadequate performance or service that need to be openly explored and addressed? All we need to do is alert some governmental agency that we need “help” in Rappahannock County, due to our unfortunate desire to protect the county’s beauty and legacy for future generations by attempting to intelligently control growth. And what elected spokesperson for the county, operating within their proper role, decided that a $40,000 per year paid position I was required to provide centralized management of the local nonprofit activities? Although the idea of conserving limited resources by providing centralized management appears to have merit, the problem with this concept centers around the issue of who gets to pick and set professional standards of behavior and accountability for that (now powerful and unelected) central manager? And finally, the grant request was for two years of salary among other expenses. Who gets to pay —for what is by then a wellentrenched position— after that? She thought of the small stream which became a roaring torrent flooding the road after every heavy rainstorm, of hauling buckets of water several hundred yards from the nearby spring, and of the time, money, and energy she would have to spend to make the place livable. I looked at the place through a child’s eyes and saw more trees than I had ever seen before, with spring sunshine making dappled shadows through the leaves. I saw green hills looming over the small hollow. A path in the back led to a small shack whose door rested invitingly open. I thought of wading with the minnows in the river which murmured and gurgled as it tumbled over the rocks. I wanted to live here. So we bought the place— 75 miles from our apartment in Alexandria and mother’s job. On our first trip as new* owners we arrived to find a large tree blown down in the front yard. As we pondered what to do, a couple walked into the yard with an axe and saw. These were our nearby neighbors, Ida and Jim Cornell, who said they were there to help. Thus began lifelong friendships which included adults, children, and assorted dogs and cats. Their influence was and still is a major force in my life. The creek, which we learned was the North Fork of the Thornton River, was popular for swimming and wading, and we could clambei up the hill behind the house which seemed to go almost straight up. My husband and children would protect it, but what would happen after they were gone? Would the land be subdivided into plots with more houses? Would someone build a huge mansion on the ridgetop? Could the U. S. Park Service take some of my land for a trailhead parking lot? Might the property be developed as a resort? Current zoning rules give some protection, but zoning rules can be changed as quickly as a new Board of Supervisors can act. To stop these or similar scenarios from taking place, we investigated placing the entire property into a conservation easement. An easement, we learned from Bob Dennis of Piedmont Environmental Council, is an agreement between the landowner and the Commonwealth of Virginia. The easement permanently restricts the future use of a property in a way that benefits the community while at the same time protecting the landowner from potential public and corporate intrusions on the property. It is sort ot do-it-yourseil permanent zoning, but voluntary rather than regulatory. Of course, under Virginia law, the easement cannot be inconsistent with the local comprehensive plan or zoning. Based on that, we decided to put the entire property into a conservation easement that protects the land in perpetuity. With the concurrence of all, we discussed what to include in the easement. I gave up my right to subdivide the property. Building on the ridgetop is forbidden. A buffer along the stream protects the riparian environment. Logging and farming are permitted but other commercial developments are not. I can build a replacement house and farm buildings if I wanted. The easement was worked out with help and suggestions from John Rice and Bob Dennis of the Piedmont Environmental Council, President Bob Lander of the Rappahannock League for Environmental Protection and attorney Alan Dranitzke, Many county residents believe that a conservation easement is nothing more than a sort of tax shelter for large landowners. That is not so. Our 26 acres are much smaller than most easement parcels. It is true that we might get a small tax break, but our only reason for the easement is to protect this land for future generations. Better yet, because the property is already in a “land use” tax program, we understand that our modest gift will result in an increase of about $150 every year in additional state aid to Rappahannock’s public schools. This may turn out to be the best and most far-reaching return we’ll get from our easement donation. The easement is our way of ensuring that 100 or 200 years from now a small portion of Rappahannock County will remain in a pristine unspoiled condition. The easement protects the beauty that surrounds us today, and in a small way helps memorialize the love and support of our family and good neighbors who are gone but whose influence and support lives on. It should be entered into with abandon or not at all .” These highly motivated and hard-working students love cooking so much they are now winning medals in state and district competition. One of them, Adam Freitag, was cited by his teacher as an “awesome” competitor and won first place in culinary arts. Iranian ^orDin, placed first in commercial baking and will go on to state competition in the spring. Corbin, for example, said he hopes to win another first place award and then go on to the prestigious Culinary Institute of America on a scholarship. Carrie Yingling has been gaining hands-on experience for almost two years working in the kitchen at the Inn at Little Washington and also has her sights on the CIA. When the Rappahannock News visited last week, the classroom was a beehive of activity with students working in teams preparing Iranian desserts such as “Sohaan-e Asali” and “Baagh-Lava” for a Global Spotlight program sponsored by Headwaters. Dressed in white jackets and chef's caps, the students looked like the aspiring chefs they are. They were going about their chores in a large commercial kitchen with dispatch. Carrie Yingling, left, and Adam Freitag are preparing to choose the perfect spice. ‘Fireside Chat’ with James Russell set for Feb. 13 at the county library By Sallie Morgan Special to the Rappahannock News The Rappahannock Association for the Arts and the Community (RAAC) welcomes Sperryville native and local author James Russell to the RAAC Friday at the Library series on Feb. 13 at 8 p.m. In his recently released book “Beyond the Rim: From Slavery to Redemption in Rappahannock County,” Russell captures the life and times of his great grandmother, Sister Caroline Terry, who grew up as a slave on various plantations in Rappahannock County, lived through the Civil War, bore the children of a white slave master, and lived to the age of 108. As a boy, Russell often spent the night at Sister Caroline’s to help tend to her needs and run for adult assistance if necessary. During those evenings, his great grandmother lay propped up in her bed telling tales of life on the plantation, stories which Russell retells so vividly it’s as if we too were sitting at her feet listening to the chatter of the “rumor gals.” This evening at the library will feature what Russell calls a “Fireside Chat” with the author about the sixyear process of pulling the book together, the other writers and former slaves who provided additional insight into Sister Caroline’s world, and of course the stories themselves, some funny, some poignant, some harsh. Arthur, a teacher and a chef in her own right, was everywhere instructing, demonstrating, and encouraging her students as they approached their tasks. Enticing aromas soon began to filter up from the stovetops. Students were preparing almond and rose water-infused Iranian delicacies and stuffed dates. Arthur moved to Rappahannock County in 1999 to work at the Inn at Little Washington. Earlier, after graduating from the Culinary Institute of America, she served as chef to the Governor of Alaska where she was bom and raised. After working at the Inn at Little Washington for a year and the Middleton Inn, Arthur went out on her own as a caterer and bakery chef and, still later, as a teacher. Music of the great swing era comes to The Theatre By Wendy Weinberg Special to theRappahannock News Music of the Benny Goodman era comes to The Theatre at Washington on Saturday, Feb. 21 when the Brooks Tegler Quartet plays a tribute to the Benny Goodman Trio and Quartet in a concert at 8 p.m. The performance features the music of the 1930s and recalls some of that era’s greatest jazz musicians with Joe Midiri on clarinet as Benny Goodman, Brooks Tegler on drums as Gene Krupa, Paul Midiri on vibes as Lionel Hampton, and Larry Eanet on piano as Teddy Wilson. The show is produced and narrated by broadcaster, writer, and musician John Tegler, whose syndicated radio show “Jazz Straight Ahead" is heard on various stations in the eastern United States. Brooks Tegler’s jazz perfor mances are wide-ranging, but he says he is particularly comfortable with music of the swing era. Gifted clarinetist Joe Midiri is at home in both the jazz and classical worlds of music, and is particularly adept in his interpretation of the music of Benny Goodman and Artie Shaw, whom he has portrayed in many concerts. His younger brother Paul is an outstanding vibraphonist who, like other members of the Quartet, has performed with many different jazz groups and bands over the years. Obituaries George E. Kidwell, Sr. Amissville resident George Everett Kidwell, Sr., 80, of Amissville died Feb. 4 at Oak Springs Comprehensive Care Center in Warrenton. He was born in Marshall, Va., on Jan. 25, 1924. Mr. Kidwell served in the U. S. Army during World War II. He was a life-time member of the Amissville Ruritans and a member of the Amissville Baptist Church. He enjoyed voluriteering with the Special Olympics and had worked with the Amissville Rescue Squad. Mr. Kidwell is survived by his wife of 62 years, Edna Elizabeth Swink Kidwell, two sons, Thomas Paul Kidwell of Sandy Level, Va., and George Everett Kidwell, Jr. of Reston, Va. Additional survivors include one sister, Alice Kriss of Reston, Va., four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. The students have this opportunity several times each year when they prepare food and desserts for a number of non-profit organizations in the county, including Headwaters and the Center •for Children and Learning (CCLC). Becoming familiar with food from other cultures and preparing international menus are unique highlights of the culinary arts course. Students also go on field trips to international restaurants. A favorite one is to Cristina’s Mexican Restaurant in Strasburg where they are given instruction and handson experience in preparing and eating authentic Mexican food. These field trips, Arthur points out, are financed by their annual fall cake and pie sale at the high school. Headwaters and CCLC spokespersons are eager to applaud the students. “We are indebted to the program and its students for all the creative work they have done for us by preparing wonderful food for the annual ‘Taste of Rappahannock’ event,” said Linda Terri, executive director of Headwaters. “We also are appreciative for their help in setting up tables, folding napkins so artfully, and serving at these dinners.” Rose Ann Sharp, director of CCLC, added, “The very professional work these students did in preparing and serving our food for our annual auction added a taste of elegance and class to our affair that cannot be praised too highly. Michael was in an automobile accident on Jan. 12. According to the Virginia State Police, at approximately 10:20 a m., Michael, accompanied by his two cousins, Chris and Randy, was driving his Ford F350 truck on Laurel Mills Road. At the intersection of Routes 618 and 649, Michael’s truck was involved in a collision with a 1999 John Deere tractor that was turning left. Chris and Randy were both treated and released the same day. Michael has been in the hospital since that date. His condition has recently been upgraded from critical (ICU) to stable. Steven had surgery at Winchester Hospital and is recuperating nicely at home. Saturday, she and son Mark attended the jazz concert at the Theater in town. Condolences to the Hazel Leake Messner family in Salt Lake City Utah. She passed away on Thursday, Feb. 5 at a local hospital there. Hazel used to live in the Sperryville area and is a subscriber to the Rappahannock News. Hazel and I have been writing back and forth for several years and she has also visited twice in our home. Daniel Knick arrives for duty in Kuwait Word has been received by family members here that Sgt. Daniel Arthur Knick, U. S. National Queu'd, as of Feb. 7 along with his Battalion, has arrived for duty in Kuwait. Sgt. Knick, a student at the University of Kentucky, was in training at Fort Knox for several weeks before being sent to Kuwait, where he will be traveling in and out of Iraq overseeing maintenance of the army vehicles. He is the nephew of this writer and prayers are coveted for his safety.
