The PowerPhone course uses 911 tapes from what PowerPhone claims is the “world's largest private library of 911 calls" and “features actual 911 tapes that never have been heard in the classroom."
Sheehan said in a telephone interview from the company’s Madison, Conn, headquarters that the courses are taught by veteran instructors with 20 or more years of experience “on both sides of the radio" as dispatchers and fire fighters.
The course, he said, deals with handling large disaster response, such as chemical disasters. But it also concentrates on how to assist a caller and how to prepare for the arrival of responders.
He said the course instructs the dispatcher on “pre-arrival assistance." It teaches what information dispatchers need to obtain from the caller such as “behavioral factors of the fire," how completely engaged it is and whether hazardous materials, firearms or other dangers are present.
