The disproportionate coverage of Ron Frazier’s over-reaction to Amy Silver’s “concept paper” needlessly stirred-up a hornet’s nest of resentment and bad feeling in the county. It should be the mission of the paper to provide information that helps our citizens understand. not infuriate, each other.
That Ms. Silver, or anyone of the organizing group involved—especially Bill and Linda Dietel—would do anything that they did not sincerely believe to be in the best interest of the county and its citizens is incomprehensible to anyone who is even vaguely acquainted with these outstanding citizens and their continuing commitment and contribution to this community.
The truth is Amy Silver’s defense. Many of the points made by Ms. Silver in her paper are difficulties or inconveniences that most see as acceptable trade-offs. That we have no supermarket, for example, is a matter of pride to many. That jobs are few and housing is scarce and expensive — may come as a surprise to Mr. Frazier but to no one else that is out and about in the county.
Most of the examples listed in the paper that supposedly “denigrate Rappahannock County” do no such thing. We all enjoy the scenery and the rural ambiance of the county, but it would be less than honest to fail to acknowledge the sacrifices we make for that.
