According to residents along the road, only two of their number, a Virginia State Police lieutenant, Harry Newlin, and his wife Nancy, want the road paved. Some 17 others oppose it.
Despite the public opposition at two public hearings and in numerous letters and appeals, three supervisors have voted twice to include the road in the Rural Rustic program.
“This has been very upsetting for all of tu and left a bad feeling about our government and any citizen input and control,” wrote John W. Hanback to Virginia Gov. Mark Warner.
“Here is a project that is unwanted by all other residents on the road and many nearby landowners and is wasteful and appears to be a favor for one individual,” he wrote.
