The Ki Theatre family which brings us this play includes the grandmother (Cathy Fort), the grandfather (Mike Mahortey), the mother (Janet Davis), the father (James Disbrow), and son (Buddy Darden).
Director Peter Hombostel explained in an interview that the play “is quite different from any play that we’ve ever produced at Ki Theatre. The play becomes part of the audience (not the other way around) as they listen to the ancestral voices rather than watch as spectators. I think that’s why Gurney called it “Ancestral Voices.”’
Hombostel presents the play as one “all about family.” It is, he says, “a play that is designed to generate personal memories and feelings. Looking back on their own unique memories from the past, the audience will be hearing their “ancestral voices,” as well as those of the play.
“For instance,” the director points out, “when the son Eddie reminisces about his first date, I think that will conjure up different memories for each member of the audience. When you listen to the grandfather and grandmother in their respective Voices,’ you see how each made radical changes and screwed up their lives by refusing to face reality.
