At least one national survey indicates that patients facing their last days of life are most concerned about being free of pain. Interestingly enough, this physical consideration aside, terminal patients placed “ being at peace with God” during their final days nearly as high on their priority list. Obviously, then, spiritual and emotional issues are on an equal footing with medical care in the minds ot many patients. Aside trom freedom from pain, those surveyed agreed on a number of other issues, including clear communications about treatment choices, spending time with family, being treated as a whole person, and having a sense ot closure or completion as life draws to . an end. These considerations hold meaning for everyone concerned.
